Size: The gorilla is the largest of all primates.
Male gorillas are 5.6 to 6 feet tall, and weigh 300
- 500 lbs. Female gorillas are up to 5 feet tall and
weigh 50 - 200 lbs.
Habitat: Gorillas are found in Africa. Gorillas
primarily inhabit tropical forest habitats. The western
lowland gorilla inhabits the tropical forests of Cameroon,
Central African Republic, Gabon, Congo, and Equatorial
Guinea. The eastern lowland gorilla inhabits the tropical
forests of Eastern Zaire. The mountain gorilla inhabits
the high altitude tropical forests of Zaire, Rwanda,
and Uganda. The Cross River gorilla inhabits a small
area between Nigeria and Cameroon.
Description: Gorillas are large primates, with
the exception of their face, palms and the soles of
their feet, gorillas are covered with course black hairs.
Behavior: Gorillas move around by knuckle-walking.
Ocassionally gorilla's will walk bipedally for short
distances, especially when carrying something.
Diet: Grown adult male gorillas consume more
than 40 lbs of vegetation a day.
Communication: Gorillas are highly intelligent
and communicate through a series of 22 distinct
sounds.

The name "gorilla" was derived from
an ancient account by a Carthaginian
explorer who sailed along the west coast
of Africa nearly 2,500 years ago. Local
people shared their name for the great
ape with him - the rough translation
of which meant "hairy person".

Gestation: Gorilla's carry their young for 8.3
to 9 months.
Birth: Gorilla's give birth to litters of one,
ocassionally there are litters of 2. Newborn gorillas
are 4 to 5 pounds at birth.
Sexually Mature: Female gorilla's are sexually
mature around 10 years of age, while male gorilla's
are sexually mature at 13 years of age.
Life Span: The gorilla's average life
span in the wild is 35 years.
